The Hybrid Crappie is a good compromise for pond owners that want to have crappie, but don't want to take the overpopulation risks that are associated with them.
The most common crappie available for stocking is the Black Crappie, but they are a boom and bust species that are unpredictable in ponds and smaller lakes. A possible solution is the Hybrid Crappie, which is not sterile, but it has a greatly reduced reproductive potential. If the pond also has Largemouth Bass, they should be able to control the crappie numbers without much trouble.
Hybrid Crappie Advice:
Like the Black Crappie, Hybrid Crappie find plenty of natural food, such as zooplankton, insect larvae, snails, and leech, but adults feed mainly on small fish, and will not take fish pellets. If you would like to stock Hybrid Crappie, we recommend up to 200 per Surface Acre for an initial stocking. They are best stocked in ponds and lakes with a Largemouth Bass population.
